Transportation

Transportation

Today we experienced several types of transportation used in this area in the 1800's. What do you think their role was in opening the Great Black Swamp? Which type of transportation would you have preferred to ride? What role did the canal boat and the train play during this time period? What was your favorite part of today's class? Have a good day! ~Dorinda~

  1. I really like train since I was a child. The train which we took today is very old. It has three carriages. There weren't many people on the train, so I had a comfortable sleep on it. During the trip, the honk made me awake, the sound is terrific loud.

The canal disappointed me a little, because the water isn't as clean as I thought and it was rainy when we were on the boat.

  2. Han Tao...When thinking of the Black Swamp and all the transportation that would have been travelling on the canal, do you think the canal would have been clear or would it have been muddy much like our experience? When considering history, would we have had a very comfortable ride or would we have been cramped with other folks on the boat? Remember most people didn't bathe very often...Would it have been a very sanitary ride? I wonder...

  3. Both, Canal Boat and Blue Bird Train, were very important ways of transportation and trade at that time. The interesting about the Canal is that the purpose of it was dual. One of the purposes was drain the water in the Black Swamp Area; the other purpose of the canal was use it as way of transportation.

  4. On that day, I was beleive that I am not going to enjoy in that trip. After that, I was in the wrong side. I had a lot of fun there. The old Blue Bird train was a boring thing to transport between two cities, it is very slowly, but you could take a nice nap in it . Also the Volunteer, which is a bout in the Miami and Erie Canals, was amazing. Also, I didn't know they separated between the women and men in that bout. The boat is one of my favorite thing in that trip becaus Anwar's on a boat. lol. Have fun guys.

  5. We had a great day at Providence Metropark and the Canal. When we rode on the train, we saw a house which was native American's. Also the train was so old, but it was interesting to ride. At the canal, we experienced the boat that was used in the past. Amazing thing was that the crews were all women! The train and the boat would be used for transportation at that time.

  6. Miami and Erie Canals was a very interesting and unique places. We discover the historic Canal town of Grand Rapids, Ohio. . We took around 20 minutes on the boat, and then we stopped in the general store. We bought antique stuff. Also, there was some volunteer made presentation about how they grinding the grain and other seeds, it was very interesting information. It was a good experience and I hope to go back a gain there with my family.

  7. Hank, do you think in the old time the crews were all women? I think it could be because I have seen many movies about that age.
