The Great Black Swamp and Wintergarden Park, Bowling Green Oh

Wintergarden Park
Today we explored The Great Black Swamp of Northwest Ohio. One of the compelling questions of the day was, "Why would anyone, in their right mind, want to settle such a difficult piece of land?" What do you think? Remember we discussed Manifest Destiny, which means that the settlers thought that they had the God given right to take and control any land they came in contact with. Do you think Manifest Destiny had anything to do with conquering the Great Black Swamp? Remember the soil is extremely fertile here... Do you think that is the reason settlers worked so hard to conquer the land? What is your opinion? Do you think it is a combination of the two or neither? Remember there are no wrong answers to this question. Please respond and we will consider the answers in tommorrow's class. Have a super evening and start reading that book! : ) Dorinda

  1. I think the fertile soil is the only reason, many people know if we want to get someting from nature we have to fight with nature. The fertile soil can make a lot of agriculture productions, So some people settled here.
I have read an American scientific fiction. Its name is Dune. In the story, many people come to a planet which is %100 covered by desert but has a great deal of source. That means sometimes enviroment is not a problem for people to develop.

  2. Actually, I don´t believe the settlers thought in the "Destiny Manifest". In my mind, the only reason because they decided to settle this land was because they had a vision, a "business vision". Due the settlers knew that all this area was a big swamp, they realize that draining it could be a great idea in order to get fields able to grow crops. In sum up, the settlers, despite this area was (and still is) a difficult piece of land, didn´t give up in their efforts because they knew the potential it had to offer.

  3. Long time ago, the soil was not developed and was flooded. Moreover, no one touched it yet, even though it had a possibility of being an agricultural land. Because it was a just swamp. But for settler, in my opinion, they might have thought that the soil will be a great agricultural land someday if they drain the water.

  4. Very interesting comments...Do you think you would have fought for a land that was filled with mosquitos, disease, and water? Do you think you have the same fortitude?

  5. Hank, I agree with your comment. In the world, there are somethings which look shotten but they are not. We need brave pioneers who can explore the unknow things.
