SS Willis Boyer

Hi Gang! Today was the second day of our exploration of Lake Erie and its effects on Northwest Ohio. Today's visit took us to an old freighter that was commission in 1911. The freighter was used for many years and is now a wonderful museum. I would like you to consider today for your reflection on this activity, the differences between the freighter and the canal boat, which carried freight last week. Would you have prefered to have been one of the original 42 crew members shoveling coal on the SS Willis Boyer, or on the canal boat carrying freight between here and St Louis? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Consider the development of technology. How many years difference is there between the use of the canal boat on the Miami and Erie Canals and the commissioning of the SS Willis Boyer?
We just want to take this opportunity to welcome a new person to our class! WELCOME TO OUR CLASS KHALID! We hope you enjoy the class...

By way of reminder, remember that your 1/2 book review is due tomorrow. Those of you who have not written your second reflection, tomorrow is the last day you can turn it in. Remember to keep reading and working on your creative writing portfolios! Good luck with all your work! Dorinda

  1. The first difference we have to notice is that the freighter vessel we had the pleasure to visit today was not part of the history of Northwest Ohio, as was the Canal Boat on the Miami and Erie Canal. Even tough the S.S. Willis B. Boye, best-known as "Schoonmaker", made its maiden trip from Toledo, it did not contributed to form the history of this part of Ohio, as the Canal Boat did. Canal boat, was directly part of NW Ohio history and contributed enormously in what today is this area. Obviously, in my mind, the technology of the "Schoonmaker" was ahead to its time, but we have to remember the Panama Canal was starting operations at that time, therefore, it had the capacity to accept vessels as "Schoonmaker", even bigger, so it could have been one reason of why was this vessel so advance for its time. On the other hand, Canal boat was just intended to ttransportation of passengers and goods, in small amounts, we could observe the size of the canal and its locks. In sum up, both technologies, by far, were so different. However, I would like have been member of booth, th "Schoonmaker" or the Canal Boat.

  3. This is first day for me in this class and I am glad to be with you. I surprised when I discovered this ship was built before Taitank only two years. The trip today was great I was enjoyed because this ship is the largest one I have seen. Finally I would to say I am looking for next trip.

  4. There would be so many different things between the canal boat and SS Willis Boyer. In case of the canal boat, the lifestyle would be more comfortable than living in the SS Willis Boyer. I guess that there would be less people in the canal boat than SS willis Boyer. I know a life of big organization when i was in the army. It was so hard to live together. I think that the life in the SS Willis Boye would be similar to my experience. So, i would have preferred to have been on the canal boat.

  5. Well. First of all, like after a wonderful day, which we are still exploring things about the Northwest Ohio history. We saw that big ship, which is SS Willis Boyer. Also we know for what they were using it. I believe that boat, which in a canal, is better than the SS Willis Boyer. Although I don’t like to work in the SS Willis Boyer even though, if it has more technology than the little boat on the canal, because I think there is a lot of work to do on that big ship. However, if there are a lot of development of technology in the SS Willis Boyer, nor if the canal boat on the Miami and Erie Canals is older than the SS Willis Boyer even if the canal baot is very slowly. Also I prefer the mosquitoes than the hot in that huge ship. If, I am going to work on that big ship. I believe that I am going to die there because the heat of that big engine. Also the SS Willis Boyer costs more money than the canal boat on the Miami and Erie Canals because the SS Willis Boyer takes a lot of gas. Finally I like to traveling on that boat than the huge ship. signature ANWAR :P

  6. I like this trip. It was the first time I saw a big ship like that. When I saw it reminded me of a ship Titanic. I think that it used some of the most advanced technology available at that time. I do not have any idea before about this ship. I enjoyed to looking at it.

  7. I think freighter is more important than the boat on the canal because of the boatload. The Americans are creative; they alter the freighter to a museum. It helps the guests to understand the history well.
